Gombe State Ready to Shine at the 22nd National Sports Festival
The Gombe State Government has given its official nod for athletes to participate in the upcoming 22nd National Sports Festival, also known as the Gateway Games. The event is set to take place in Ogun State from May 16 to 30, 2025.
The approval was granted by His Excellency, Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya.
Governor Yahaya's approval underscores his administration's commitment to youth empowerment and sports development. Since taking office in 2019, the Governor has consistently supported state athletes in national competitions. Notably, he facilitated Gombe's participation in the 2020 edition in Benin and the 2022 edition in Asaba.
According to Mr. Saleh Manga, Director of Sports in the Ministry, Gombe State will field over 72 athletes competing in 12 sporting events. These include athletics/para athletics, boxing, karate, taekwondo, judo, table tennis, badminton, cycling, weightlifting, gymnastics, and cricket.
"This is a major opportunity for our athletes to showcase their talents and represent Gombe State with pride. We are grateful for the Governor's continued commitment to sports," Manga said.
Hon. Adamu Inuwa Pantami, Commissioner for Youth and Sports, also expressed gratitude to the Governor. "We thank His Excellency, Governor Inuwa Yahaya, for always standing with our youth and investing in their future through sports. This approval not only boosts the morale of our athletes but also shows the Governor's passion for development and excellence," Pantami stated.
As the Gateway Games approach, Gombe athletes are training intensively to compete against the best from across the country. The 22nd National Sports Festival is expected to draw thousands of athletes, coaches, and spectators from all 36 states and the FCT.
